*ALL SOLID WASTE FACILITIES WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2024 FOR GOOD FRIDAY AND WILL REOPEN ON SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 2024*
The Jackson County Solid Waste Department will accept unwanted Christmas Trees for free for Jackson County Residents at the Cashiers Staffed Recycling Center located at 4560 Highway 107 South, Cashiers, NC, 28717 and at the Jackson County Transfer Station located at 1172 Mineral Springs Drive, Sylva, NC, 28779. Staffed Recycling Centers Hours
72 hours per week April through October:

Transfer Station is open 50 hours per week:

Solid Waste and Recycling ChartJackson County operates the eight Staffed Recycling Centers (SRC) shown above, to collect Solid Waste from only residents living in Jackson County as well as collect recyclable materials from all citizens. There is no on site charge to residents for these services.
Construction & Demolition Waste - $66.00 per ton
Concrete/Asphalt and Commercial Waste - $66.00 per ton
Mixed Loads - $90.00 per ton
Brush - $33.00 per ton
Jackson County Recycle Program Information
Jackson County uses a dual stream recycling system. Plastic, glass, and metal containers can all be put in the same bin which is marked as Commingled Recycling. Paper is put into a different bin which is labeled Fiber/Mixed Paper.
DEFINITIONS of waste collected at Staffed Recycling Centers around the county.
Batteries
Lead-Acid automobile batteries refer to vehicle batteries. Alkaline batteries are those which are placed in items such as flashlights, clocks.
C&D Waste
Construction & Demolition solid waste resulting solely from remodeling, repair or demolition by a resident on residential housing in quantities normally associated with residential housing maintenance.
Commercial Waste
Any solid waste generated by a business that is classified as a commercial business or non-profit.
Container Recycling
Aluminum Cans, steel cans, plastic bottles and containers, and glass containers. Items not accepted: glass cookware, ceramics, mirrors, window glass, headlights, light bulbs, or medicine bottles, plastic motor oil or antifreeze containers, tubs, pots, or trays.
Electronics Recycling
Electronic equipment is accepted at all county SRCs, except for Dillsboro. Examples include all TVs, desktop computers, laptops, mice, printers, monitors, scanners, and printer-scanner-fax combos.Visit: Powerhouse Recycling - CLICK HERE for more information.
Fiber Recycling
Consists of newspaper, mixer paper and corrugated cardboard.
Items not recyclable are:Paper towels, cups or plates, tissues, blueprints, pet food bags, carbon paper, waxed paper, wallpaper or plastic bags.
Household Bulky Items
Includes household furniture, mattresses, and bedding.
Residential Waste
Any solid waste, garbage and refuse as defined in the Solid Waste Management Ordinance of Jackson County, which is generated in the normal daily activities of a single residence. This excludes Construction & Demolition, LCID, and hazardous waste.
Waste Oil
Used motor oil resulting from the maintenance of household engines such as automobiles, trucks, boats and lawn & garden equipment. Used oil filters are also recycled at waste oil locations. This category also includes used cooking oil.
White Goods
Includes inoperative or discarded items such as ranges, water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers. Refrigerators and freezers are no longer included in this category.
Yard Waste & Brush
Solid waste consisting solely of vegetative matter such as leaves, pine straw, pinecones, grass trimmings, and small limbs in quantities normally associated with residential yard maintenance.
Unauthorized Waste
The County will not accept or transport any hazardous waste, liquid waste, regulated medical waste, sharps not properly packaged, railroad ties/cross ties, regulated asbestos containing material as defined 40 CRF 61, PCB waste as defined in 40 CFR 761 or any other waste that would not be acceptable for disposal at the Jackson County Solid Waste facilities.
Jackson County Solid Waste cannot accept any item that contains refrigerant such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc., due to possible refrigerant spills. Please take these items to Metal Wood Recycling, 656 Skyland Drive in Sylva.
Jackson County can no longer accept any items containing refrigerant (also known as Freon). This includes refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and other items.
According to the EPA, Freon is a stable, nonflammable, moderately toxic gas that is tasteless and mostly odorless. Freon contains chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are known to deplete the ozone. For this reason, when there is a leak it is considered environmentally hazardous.
Please take these items to Metal Wood Recycling, 656 Skyland Drive, Sylva. You may receive compensation.
The County Staffed Recycling Centers will not accept Commercial Waste. The Staffed Recycling Centers are for Residential Waste only.

Recycle Information
The following list offers some options for recycling materials in Jackson County. Any business listed is not endorsed by Jackson County, but is provided as strictly as an informational service. For information about Staffed Recycling Centers and the items they recycle, see the list below.
Aluminum cans
Accepted at all Jackson County Staffed Recycle Center Sites in Container Recycling.
Aluminum Scrap and Siding
Recycle at all Staffed Recycling Centers.
Antifreeze
Residents can recycle used antifreeze at Cashiers and Dillsboro SRCs,
Appliances
Large appliances, such as washing machines and stoves can be taken to the County Staffed Recycling Center sites that receive White Goods for recycling, or taken for refurbishment. Smaller household appliances in WORKING condition can be taken to area thrift shops. Please call before donating.
Asphalt
Old asphalt can be brought to the Transfer Station from county residences.
Bar and Restaurant Recycling
All mixed recycling for businesses can be brought to the Transfer Station or Minerals Springs Road in Sylva.
Batteries
County residents may bring lead-acid batteries to the Transfer Station or to the Cashiers SRC. Alkaline batteries are accepted at all Jackson County SRCs.
Books
Soft covered books can be recycled with Mixed Paper at all Staffed Recycling Center sites. Hard cover books must have the covers removed, and then the interior pages can be recycled with Mixed Paper.
Building Materials
Building Materials must be taken to the Transfer Station. There will be a tipping fee.
Clothing
Jackson County does not contract with any company which can recycle clothing. We encourage you to consider donating gently used clothing to area thrift stores.
Coat Hangers
Wire coat hangers which are non-coated can be put into the metal container at all SRCs, but consider donating to a local dry-cleaners. Plastic coat hangers cannot be recycled in western North Carolina so consider donating to thrift stores.
Compact Disks
CD's are taken at all county SRCs in the trash bin. Compact disks cannot be recycled. Remember that reuse is the most effective form of recycling. Sometimes music stores will purchase used CD’s, or look online for other reuse ideas.
Computer Equipment
Computer equipment can be recycled at all Staffed Recycling Centers except for Dillsboro, and the Transfer Station in the Electronics recycling areas. Please note that Disability Partners in Sylva can take your old computers; they will be refurbished and donated to their clients and other individuals with special needs. They can be reached at 828-631-1167. Please call before arriving with your old computer.
Corrugated Cardboard
Recycle at all Staffed Recycling Centers in the Fiber Recycling.
Electronic Equipment and Scrap
Electronic equipment and scraps can be recycled at all Staffed Recycling Centers and the Transfer Station in the Electronics recycling areas. Examples include all TVs, desktop computers, laptops, mice, printers, monitors, scanners, and printer-scanner-fax combos. Eyeglasses
Eyeglasses can be taken at all SRCs in the trash bin but we encourage donation of old eyeglasses to the Lions Club. They have donation boxes in most optician offices and also Walmart.
Fiber Recycling
Consists of newspaper, mixer paper and corrugated cardboard.
Items not recyclable are: Paper towels, cups or plates, tissues, blueprints, pet food bags, carbon paper, waxed paper, wallpaper or plastic bags.
Fluorescent Bulbs
County residents may bring fluorescent bulbs which are the length of four feet can be brought to the Transfer Station on Mineral Springs Road in Sylva and at any SRC. Please do not tape bulbs to transport. The adhesive affects the recycling process. We do not accept fluorescent bulbs from businesses or bulbs which are eight feet long.
Furniture
Furniture can be recycled at all Staffed Recycling Centers, and the Transfer Station.
Glass
Bring glass to containers recycling at all Staffed Recycling Centers. Please do not include window glass, Pyrex dishes, or crystal due to different melting temperatures.
Junk Mail
Junk Mail can be recycled with mixed paper at all Staffed Recycling Centers in the Fiber recycling. To stop residential junk mail, return the unwanted mail to sender in their postage-paid or return mail envelope along with a note asking to be removed from their list. You may also leave a "No Box Holders Please" note for your mail carrier.
Mattresses
Residential mattresses may be taken to any SRC site in Jackson County. All commercial mattresses must be taken to the Transfer Station. A link to a mattress recycling guide is available here:Mattress Recycling Guide - Click Here
Metal/Scrap Metal/Steel Cans
Accepted at all Staffed Recycling Centers and the Transfer Station.
Mercury Containing Thermostats
County residents may bring these to the Transfer Station on Mineral Springs Drive.
Mixed Paper
Mixed Paper, such as junk mail (envelopes included), office paper, magazines, notebooks (bindings removed), cereal boxes (liner removed), cardboard, 6 and 12-pack boxes and other paper packaging (without waxy or plastic coating) can be recycled at all Staffed Recycling Centers in the Fiber Recycling.
Motor Oil
Recycle at the Transfer Station, and the Cashiers and Cullowhee SRCs.
Newspaper
Recycle at all Staffed Recycling Center sites in Fiber Recycling. Paper packaging that is non-metallic and not coated with wax or plastic can be recycled with mixed paper at all Staffed Recycling Center sites in the Fiber Recycling.
Paint
The Transfer Station and the SRCs do not take liquid paint. Please dry it before bringing it in. This can be accomplished more quickly by adding dirt, sand, or kitty litter. Stir it in then let it sit with the lid removed until thoroughly dried. Once dried, residents can dispose of the cans, with the lids removed, in the regular trash at all SRCs. Businesses must bring their dried paints to the Transfer Station.
Pesticides
Please contact the NC Cooperative Extension Service at 828-586-4009 to find out how to get rid of pesticides while keeping your environment clean.
Plastic Bags
Accepted at all SRCs in the trash bin. Minimize plastic bag use by bringing your own shopping bags with you when you shop. Reuse all bags. Please recycle plastic grocery bags and plastic newspaper bags at your grocery store.
Plastic Containers
Recycle at all Staffed Recycling Centers in the Container Recycling.
Syringes
Taken at all county SRCs. There is no local program for recycling used syringes. Dispose of syringes in a secure plastic container such as a plastic peanut butter jar or laundry detergent bottle with the lid screwed on tightly before placing in the trash bin.
Televisions
Recycle at all Staffed Recycling Center in the Electronics Recycling.
Tires
Recycle at the Transfer Station on Mineral Springs Drive.
White Goods
These are accepted at the Transfer Station and all SRCs. This includes stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers.
Yard Waste, Brush, and Land Clearing Debris
The Transfer Station will accept this material. A tipping fee will be charged.
