Understand your coverage type

Medicare: Members who receive coverage through a federal health insurance program that provides health care coverage to Americans, age 65 or older (people with certain disabilities or health conditions may be eligible before they turn 65).

Individual - Exchange: Members who have a Kaiser Permanente Individual and Family Plan membership purchased through a health benefit exchange (like healthcare.gov).

Individual: Members who have a Kaiser Permanente Individual and Family Plan membership purchased directly from Kaiser Permanente and did not purchase from a health benefit exchange. 

COBRA: Members who are eligible to stay on their employer plan after a certain life event (such as loss of employment) by directly paying the monthly premium themselves.

Your monthly premium bill amount may change based on these factors:

  • Your age – After age 14, your rate changes every year based on your age bracket.
  • Your location - A change in the service area can be a determining factor.
  • Your choice of plan
  • The industry costs of health care – The industry cots of delivering care increases every year. Some of these costs are due to general inflation (the expenses of running hospitals and medical offices, as well as wages and benefits for providers – physicians, pharmacy, laboratory, etc.). In addition, new and more costly technology and medications are continually being introduced, which can affect premium costs.
Premium billing statements are typically generated within the first two weeks of the month. 
For members in California, Colorado, Oregon, Southwest Washington, Georgia, Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C.: Premium payments are due at the end of the prior month. For example: If your coverage is effective on June 1st then the premium payment is due by the last day of May.

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, and Southwest Washington: To view your premium payment history, sign into kp.org/payonline.

To request a payment history letter, contact Member Services.

Note: Your premium payment history will only show payments made online, payments by phone, or payments that a Member Services representative assisted you with over the phone. Your premium payment history will not show premium payments that you’ve mailed.

For members in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington: Payment histories are not yet available for request through our Support Center. Please call the number on your monthly premium statement for assistance.

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, and Southwest Washington: Visit your Profile & Preferences on kp.org and then complete the following steps.

  • Select Yes, I'd like to go paperless for available documents.
  • Check the premium bills checkbox. 
  • Check the attestation agreement checkbox.
  • Select the I Agree button to complete your paperless billing enrollment.   

For members in Maryland and Virginia: Go to Infosend.

For members in Washington: Paperless premium billing is not yet available.

Online payment notifications

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, and Southwest Washington: You’ll receive a notification when your premium bill is ready to view online. You’ll also be able to download or print a copy for your records.

If the balance due for your plan is higher than expected and you’ve signed up for automatic monthly payments, please review and verify that your payment method information on file is correct. For more questions about your premium balance, contact Member Services.

Refunds

To request a refund, contact Member Services.

For members in Washington: Refund requests are not yet available.

Refunds will be returned via the method the original payments were received. If the original payment was submitted by check, the refund will be sent by check in 4 to 6 weeks. If the original payment was made by credit card, the refund will be sent in 1 to 2 weeks. 

If you are an active member, the credit will remain on your account and will apply towards next month’s premium bill.

If you no longer have Kaiser Permanente coverage, the refund will be returned via the method that the last payment was received.

  • Your eligibility for subsidies – Eligibility for subsidies can impact your monthly membership payment. For members eligible for federal subsidies, the cost is set by a percentage of your income and is not tied to the overall rate for the plan.

 

For members in California, Colorado, Maryland, and Washington D.C.: Premium billing statements are generated on the 5th of the month. 

For members in Georgia, Hawaii, Oregon, and Virginia: Premium billing statements are generated on the 7th of the month.

For members in Washington: Premium billing statements are generated on the 7th of each month. Premium bills are typically mailed during the middle of each month. You will also receive an electronic copy of your bill online. If you enrolled in paperless billing, you will only receive your premium statement online.
 

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, Virginia, and Washington D.C.: Premium payments are due at the end of the prior month. For example: If your coverage is effective on June 1st then the premium payment is due by the last day of May.

  1. Sign in to your account, and then select Preferences from the Account menu.
  2. From the Account and Preferences page, select Delivery preferences, and then select Payment notifications.
  3. From the What is your payment notification preference? page, select Sign up for paperless billing to stop receiving printed invoices.
  4. Agree to the Digital Document Delivery terms and conditions to enroll in paperless billing and billing email notifications.

Online payment notifications

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, and Southwest Washington: Premium billing notifications are not yet available.

Understand your coverage type

Medicare: Members who receive coverage through a federal health insurance program that provides health care coverage to Americans, age 65 or older (people with certain disabilities or health conditions may be eligible before they turn 65).

Individual - Exchange: Members who have a Kaiser Permanente Individual and Family Plan membership purchased through a health benefit exchange (like healthcare.gov).

Individual: Members who have a Kaiser Permanente Individual and Family Plan membership purchased directly from Kaiser Permanente and did not purchase from a health benefit exchange. 

COBRA: Members who are eligible to stay on their employer plan after a certain life event (such as loss of employment) by directly paying the monthly premium themselves.

Your monthly premium bill amount may change based on these factors:

  • Your age – After age 14, your rate changes every year based on your age bracket.
  • Your location - A change in the service area can be a determining factor.
  • Your choice of plan
  • The industry costs of health care – The industry cots of delivering care increases every year. Some of these costs are due to general inflation (the expenses of running hospitals and medical offices, as well as wages and benefits for providers – physicians, pharmacy, laboratory, etc.). In addition, new and more costly technology and medications are continually being introduced, which can affect premium costs.

Premium billing statements are typically generated within the first two weeks of the month. 

Premium bills are typically mailed during the middle of each month. You can also view an electronic copy of your bill online. If you enrolled in paperless, you will not receive a bill in the mail and can view your premium statement online.

For members in California, Colorado, Oregon, Southwest Washington, Georgia, Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C.: Premium payments are due at the end of the prior month. For example: If your coverage is effective on June 1st then the premium payment is due by the last day of May.

For members in California, Colorado, Maryland, and Washington D.C.: Premium billing statements are generated on the 5th of the month. 

For members in Georgia, and Virginia: Premium billing statements are generated on the 7th of the month.

For members in Hawaii, Oregon, Southwest Washington and Washington: Premium billing statements are generated on the 6th of each month.

Premium bills are typically mailed during the middle of each month. You can also view an electronic copy of your bill online. If you enrolled in paperless billing, you will not receive a bill in the mail and can view your premium statement online.

To request your payment history for a specific timeframe, contact Member Services.

Note: Your premium payment history will show up to 13 months of history. If you’ve recently transitioned to the new payment system, you’ll only see payments made as of the date you transitioned. 

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, and Southwest Washington: Visit your Profile & Preferences on kp.org and then complete the following steps.

  1. Select Paperless. 
  2. From the Paperless Preferences screen, select the Premium bills checkbox.
  3. Agree to the digital document delivery terms & conditions. 
  4. Select the I Agree button to complete your paperless billing enrollment.

For members in Washington:

  1. Sign into your account, and then select Preferences from the Account menu. 
  2. From the Account and Preferences page, select Delivery preferences, and then select Payment notifications.

  4. Agree to the Digital Document Delivery terms and conditions to enroll in paperless billing and billing email notifications.

Online payment notifications

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, Southwest Washington and Washington: You’ll receive a notification when your premium bill is ready to view online. You’ll also be able to download or print a copy for your records.

If the balance due for your plan is higher than expected and you’ve signed up for automatic monthly payments, please review and verify that your payment method information on file is correct. For more questions about your premium balance, contact Member Services.

Note: This will only stop premium billing notifications. You may still receive other Kaiser Permanente notifications.

Refunds

To request a refund, contact Member Services.
Refunds will be returned via the method the original payments were received. If the original payment was submitted by check, the refund will be sent by check in 4 to 6 weeks. If the original payment was made by credit card or from your bank account, the refund will be sent in 1 to 2 weeks. 

If you are an active member, the credit will remain on your account and will apply towards next month’s premium bill.

If you no longer have Kaiser Permanente coverage, the refund will be returned via the method that the last payment was received.

How do I pay my premium bill?

Your monthly premium bill amount may change based on these factors:

  • If you are new to COBRA you are responsible for paying your Premium Bill.
  • Your amount may have changed with your annual renewal.
  • Your rate may be impacted due to a qualifying life event and your choice of plan.
Premium billing statements are typically generated within the first two weeks of the month.

For members in California, Washington, Hawaii, Virginia, and Washington D.C.: Premium Payments are due at the end of the prior month for which coverage is effective. For example: Coverage effective June 1st, Premium Payment is due by the last day of May.

For members in Maryland: Premium Payments are due on the first day of the month for which coverage is effective: For example, Coverage effective June 1st, Premium payment is due by the first day in June.

Refunds

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Oregon, Southwest Washington, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C.:

There are two options to set up monthly automatic premium bill payments.

For members in Washington: Go to kp.org/payonline.

Your monthly premium bill amount may change based on these factors:

  • Your age – After age 14, your rate changes every year based on your age bracket.
  • Your location - A change in the service area can be a determining factor.
  • Your choice of plan
  • The industry costs of health care – The industry cots of delivering care increases every year. Some of these costs are due to general inflation (the expenses of running hospitals and medical offices, as well as wages and benefits for providers – physicians, pharmacy, laboratory, etc.). In addition, new and more costly technology and medications are continually being introduced, which can affect premium costs.
  • Your eligibility for subsidies – Eligibility for subsidies can impact your monthly membership payment. For members eligible for federal subsidies, the cost is set by a percentage of your income and is not tied to the overall rate for the plan.

 

For members in California, Colorado, Maryland, and Washington D.C.: Premium billing statements are generated on the 5th of the month. 

For members in Georgia, Hawaii, Oregon, and Virginia: Premium billing statements are generated on the 7th of the month.

For members in Washington: Premium billing statements are generated on the 7th of each month. Premium bills are typically mailed during the middle of each month. You will also receive an electronic copy of your bill online. If you enrolled in paperless billing, you will only receive your premium statement online.
 

For members in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, Virginia, and Washington D.C.: Premium payments are due at the end of the prior month. For example: If your coverage is effective on June 1st then the premium payment is due by the last day of May.
